Garden and lawn mowing in Cairns

Grass in Far North Queensland does not behave like grass down south. From December through to April the monsoon trough sits over the coast, the humidity does not drop, and a lawn that looked fine on Sunday is over the boot by the following Saturday. That is the whole problem this service is built around: keeping up with tropical growth without you having to fight it in thirty-two degree heat.

We arrange mowing, edging, hedging, weeding and clean-ups for houses, rentals, body corporates and commercial sites from Palm Cove down to Gordonvale. Most customers sit on a standing round — fortnightly through the dry, weekly once the wet arrives — but one-off cuts, pre-sale tidy-ups and end-of-lease clean-ups are just as common.

What gets done on a visit

A standard lawn mowing visit is a cut, edges along paths, driveways and beds, and a blow down of hard surfaces so clippings are not walked inside. On buffalo and zoysia the deck goes up, not down — scalping a tropical lawn in February is how you invite weeds in.

Beyond the mow, the common add-ons are garden maintenance for beds that have gone jungly, hedge and shrub pruning to keep screening plants dense, weed control along fence lines and paths, gutter cleaning before the storm season, and green waste removal when the pile is bigger than a wheelie bin will take. Larger blocks, easements and vacant land are handled as acreage mowing and slashing with a ride-on or a tractor slasher.

What this service will not do

It is worth being straight about the edges. Big tree work is out — anything needing a climber, a chipper or a traffic-managed drop is a job for a qualified arborist, not a gardener with a pole saw. Full landscape construction, retaining walls, turf laying at scale and irrigation installs are not part of a maintenance round either. Chemical weed control is spot work, not a licensed broadacre spraying operation. If your job is one of those, say so on the phone and you will get pointed somewhere sensible rather than strung along.

Tropical conditions, planned for

Local knowledge here is mostly practical, not poetic. Long grass on a Cairns block holds cane toads and the occasional scrub python, so overgrown jobs are walked first and cut in stages. Sandflies are worst at dawn and dusk near the mangroves at Smithfield and Yorkeys, which is why beachside rounds run mid-morning. Clay flats around Earlville and the Mulgrave hold water for days after a dump, so a ride-on stays off them and a walk-behind goes on. Steep Redlynch valley blocks get cut across the slope with a self-propelled machine, never a ride-on.

After a blow, green waste volumes go up five-fold and everybody rings at once. Customers on a standing round get seen first — that is the practical reason to be on one.

Getting a price

Quotes are free and given on the block, not guessed from an aerial photo. If you want to understand what moves the number before you ring, the lawn mowing price guide sets out the factors honestly. To check we cover your street, the service areas page lists the suburbs with notes on soil, turf and access for each. For anything else, the contact page has the hours, or read a bit more about how the service works.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to mow a lawn in Cairns?

Lawn mowing in Cairns typically starts from $50 plus GST. What you actually pay depends on the size of the lawn, how long the grass has been left, the slope, how much of the block a ride-on can reach, and whether clippings are bagged and carted away. Ring for a free quote and we can talk through the options for your block.

How often should I get the lawn mowed in Cairns?

From roughly December to April, when the wet season is on and the humidity stays high, most Cairns lawns need cutting every week. From about May to November growth slows enough that a fortnightly round keeps things tidy. Buffalo and zoysia lawns can usually stretch a few extra days; carpet grass and guinea grass cannot.

Do you cut lawns that have been left to go wild?

Yes, though overgrown blocks are quoted separately from a normal mow. Long grass in the tropics hides cane toads, snakes and rubbish, so the first pass is done slowly and often with a brushcutter or slasher rather than a domestic mower. Expect a heavier clean-up charge and a second tidy-up cut a week or two later.

Which suburbs around Cairns do you cover?

The regular run covers Cairns City and the inner suburbs, the northern beaches up to Palm Cove, the Redlynch and Freshwater valleys, and the southern corridor through Edmonton and Gordonvale. Acreage and slashing work goes further out. If you are on the edge of that, ring and ask rather than assuming we do not get there.
