Most hedge-trimming advice written for Australia assumes a winter dormancy. Cairns does not really get one. Murraya, acalypha, golden cane, duranta and mock orange keep pushing growth through most of the year, and they push hard once the wet arrives. The practical result is that the right schedule here is driven by growth rate, not by the calendar month.
The pattern that works: a shaping cut in late winter or early spring to set the frame before the surge, light tip trims through the wet to keep the face flat and the plant dense, and a tidy at the end of the wet as growth slows.
Why frequent light cuts beat one big one
Every trim makes a hedge branch just behind the cut. Cut often and lightly and you build a dense outer shell of small branches, which is exactly what a screen needs. Cut hard once a year and you remove that shell, expose the woody interior, and get long whippy regrowth that flops. In the tropics the difference shows up within a single season.
That is also why formal hedges in Cairns take more visits than people expect. A crisp murraya face wants cutting four to six times a year. A relaxed screening row can live on two or three.
Common hedges around Cairns and how they behave
- Murraya is everywhere, reshoots reliably from old wood, and tolerates being reduced in stages. It also flowers heavily after rain, so trimming timing affects whether you get the scent.
- Golden cane palm is not a hedge and should not be cut like one. It is thinned by removing whole canes at ground level, never topped.
- Acalypha and duranta grow fast, respond well to hard renovation, and will fill a hole in a season.
- Conifers and fine-leafed screens do not reshoot from bare wood. Cut into the brown and the hole stays.
Getting that distinction right is most of the skill. The rest is keeping the face plumb and the top level, which is a string line and patience.
Small tree pruning, and the limit
Light pruning of small ornamental trees — lifting a canopy off a roof, removing rubbing or dead limbs, taking weight off a leaning frangipani before cyclone season — fits within this service where it can be done safely from the ground or a ladder.
What does not fit: anything needing a climber, a rope and harness, an elevated work platform, a chipper, or traffic management. Anything near an overhead power line. Anything on a protected or significant tree where a council approval question arises. Those go to a qualified arborist, and we will say so rather than have a go.
Booking it with the rest
Most customers pair hedge work with their mowing visit or with a garden maintenance round so the site is tidied once. Bulky trimmings are usually carted out under green waste removal, and if the hedge sits over a driveway the gutters above it are often worth doing at the same time under gutter cleaning.

When is the best time to trim hedges in Cairns?
Not the same answer as southern Australia. There is effectively no dormant period here, so the useful timing is growth-based: a solid shaping cut in late winter or early spring before the growth surge, light tip trims through the wet to hold the shape, and a tidy-up cut around April or May as growth eases. Avoid heavy cutting in the hottest, driest weeks.
How often do tropical hedges need trimming?
Fast growers like murraya, acalypha, golden cane and duranta usually need four to six cuts a year in Cairns, and more if you want a sharp formal face. Slower screening plants can manage two or three. Through the wet season a hedge can put on fresh growth within a fortnight of being cut, which is why light frequent trims beat occasional hard ones.
Can a hedge that has gone woody be brought back?
Often, but not in a single visit and not for every species. Murraya, duranta and acalypha usually reshoot from old wood if they are cut back in stages over a season and fed and watered afterwards. Conifers and some fine-leafed screens will not reshoot from bare wood at all, and cutting into them leaves a permanent hole. We will say which one you have before cutting.
Do you cut hedges above the fence line and near power lines?
Hedges and shrubs within safe reach from the ground or a ladder are fine. Anything close to overhead service lines is not — in Queensland there are minimum approach distances for untrained workers, and that work belongs to a qualified arborist or the network provider. If your hedge has grown into the wires, we will tell you rather than take the job.
What happens to the clippings?
Hedge trimmings are bulky and do not compress well, so they are normally bagged or loaded straight onto a trailer. A modest amount can go in your green bin if there is room. Anything more than that is carted out under our green waste service, and the removal is priced by volume rather than by weight.
