Lawn Mowing
Regular and one-off mowing, edging and blowing down for homes, rentals and commercial sites.
Learn more →In the wet tropics a weed goes from seedling to seeding in weeks. Timing matters more than the product does.
In the wet tropics the growing conditions that make a lawn look good in March are exactly the conditions weeds want. Warm nights, daily rain and high humidity mean a seedling can be flowering and setting seed inside a few weeks. Miss a month in the middle of the wet and you are not weeding any more, you are clearing.
That changes the approach. Weed control in Cairns is mostly about timing and repetition, not about finding a magic product.
Nutgrass and sedges are the ones that generate the most phone calls. They grow faster than turf, stand above the cut within two days of a mow, and snap at the stem when pulled, leaving the nut in the soil to shoot again. Real control is a season of repeat treatment.
Broadleaf lawn weeds — singapore daisy, khaki weed, creeping oxalis, cudweed — take hold wherever turf has thinned, which usually means shade, compaction or a lawn that has been cut too short.
Guinea grass and para grass come over the fence from creek banks, cane headlands and vacant blocks. They are big, coarse and seed heavily, and once established on a fence line they need cutting and treating rather than pulling.
Vines — morning glory, glycine, and on rural fringes rubber vine — climb shrubs in a single wet season and pull them over. They are cut at the base and the root crown dealt with, not just ripped down.
Most jobs are a mix. Hand weeding for anything in a bed near plants you want to keep. Spot spraying for weeds in turf, paving joints, gravel and along fences. A knockdown followed by a second pass a fortnight later on badly infested hard surfaces, because one application rarely finishes a mature weed. Products are used according to their labels, and the crew will tell you the re-entry period before they leave.
If you would prefer no chemical is used on your property, that is a reasonable request and it is straightforward to work by hand and mulch instead. It takes longer and costs more, and it is worth saying so up front.
This is spot and domestic-scale weed work. It is not licensed commercial broadacre spraying, it is not agricultural weed management on cane land, and it is not declared-pest-plant control under a biosecurity plan. Where a job needs a licensed chemical operator, you will be told.
Chemicals reset the block. Ground cover keeps it. A lawn cut at the right height for its species holds out most seedlings on its own, which is one of the reasons deck height matters so much in regular mowing. In beds, coarse mulch at depth does the same job, and topping it up is part of every garden maintenance round. Where a fence line has gone completely over, the cut-and-cart step belongs with green waste removal, and on larger blocks the first pass is usually slashing.
Weed jobs are quoted on site because infestation level is impossible to judge from a photo. The price guide explains the same drivers for mowing, and the service areas page lists the suburbs covered.

Learn more →Nutgrass and the related sedges are the ones people ring about most, because they outgrow turf within days of rain and pull off at the stem while leaving the nut behind. After that come broadleaf invaders like singapore daisy, khaki weed and creeping oxalis, plus guinea grass and para grass moving in from creek banks, cane headlands and vacant blocks next door.
Because pulling it snaps the stem and leaves the underground nut and its runners intact, and each nut can produce several new shoots. Control needs either patient repeat removal that exhausts the nuts, or a selective treatment aimed at sedges rather than a general weed spray. Either way it is a season of work, not one visit, and anyone promising otherwise is guessing.
Products are used per their label, which sets the re-entry period, and the crew will tell you what that period is before leaving. Typical advice is to keep pets and kids off treated areas until the spray has fully dried. If you would rather no chemical was used at all, say so when you book and the work is done by hand and by mulching instead — it costs more in labour.
Spot treatment of weeds within a lawn, yes. Broadacre or blanket spraying, and any work requiring a commercial chemical operator licence, is not what this service is. If you need a paddock or a large commercial site treated at that scale, you want a licensed spraying contractor, and we will say so rather than take it on.
Ground cover. A thick lawn cut at the right height shades out most seedlings; a bare, scalped lawn is an invitation. In beds it is coarse mulch at a decent depth, topped up after the wet washes it out. Chemicals and hand weeding buy you the reset. Cutting height, mulch depth and regular attention are what keep it.
